Here and Then: A Photo Exhibition of the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb - Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum
The Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb, discovered in Hong Kong in 1955, remains an important monument for studying the territory's ancient history. In the half a century since the tomb was unearthed, the surrounding area has experienced massive changes: the resettlement buildings that characterised Sham Shui Po in the 1950s have all been torn down and replaced by new developments. An engineer from the Public Works Department, Michael Constantin Yatskin, was in charge of the levelling work at the resettlement site back then, and he kept a faithful record of how the tomb and the artefacts inside were unearthed in 1955. In 2007, his daughter, Mrs Anna Whitehead, generously donated a collection of her father's photos to the Hong Kong Museum of History, and we now hope that these rare images will reproduce some of the excitement at the discovery of the tomb and provide an insight into how the excavation was conducted in a work-log format.

Introduction
The Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb was discovered in 1955 when the Government was levelling a hill slope at the Lei Cheng Uk Village for the construction of resettlement buildings. According to its structure, inscriptions on the tomb bricks and tomb finds, it is believed that the tomb was built in the Eastern Han dynasty (AD 25 - 220). The tomb was declared as a gazetted monument in 1988 and is preserved permanently thereafter. Though it is closed to the public for conservation reasons, visitors can still have a glimpse of the interior of the tomb through the glass panel at the entrance passage.

The exhibition hall was built adjacent to the tomb. In addition to the display of pottery and bronze wares excavated from the tomb, there are two exhibitions namely "Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb" and "Here and Then: A Photo Exhibition of the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb" on display. Texts, graphics, photos, maps, videos and models are used to introduce the geographical situation, discovery and structure of the tomb.
